60th Anniversary of MACV-SOG's
Fellow SOA members, family and friends:
This year, we celebrate the 60th Anniversary of MACV-SOG's activation. This anniversary is not just a chronological milestone but a time for reflection and celebration of SOG's significant and enduring legacy despite its relatively short operational history from 1964 to 1972.
This will be our 48th SOAR. In 1976, Jim Butler incorporated the SOA as a charitable organization, and shortly after, it became a national organization. Forty-five years ago - In 1979, the SOA became the first Veterans Group to support the League of Families formally. In 1980, with the help of General Jack Singlaub, MACVSOG, and its missions appeared for the first time in a documented history of the Vietnam War. On April 4, 2001, MACV-SOG and supporting units were awarded the Presidential Unit Citation at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
All of these milestones signify the SOAs' and its members' endurance and success. We plan to demonstrate our ability to adapt and thrive, continuing our commitment to our members in the future. A committee is now working on getting the Presidential Gold Medal awarded to MACV-SOG. We're working hard to recruit younger members who continued the Special Operations legacy on recent battlefields and incorporate their stories into the reunion. We welcome more and more family members to SOAR each year, bringing new perspectives and strengthening our bonds.
The Reunion Committee has put together an unbelievably interesting and informative Pre-Reunion Packet (PRP) for you. Be sure to look over the Master Event List (MEL) to learn what events will be presented when we all gather for the 48th SOAR in Las Vegas, NV. Now that the PRP is delivered electronically, it includes more photos from years past. Even if you won't be attending SOAR, enjoy the photos and see which of your friends are receiving tenure pins. See who's running for the Board of Directors and get ready for the upcoming election.
Bob Daniels, the Quartermaster, has designed a 2" collectors coin and a reunion T-shirt to celebrate this milestone in our history. The coins will be the SOAR XLVIII registration gift; the t-shirts will be for sale. Both can be purchased during SOAR or from the QM store right now.
